Creating your first project
A project in Verkilo holds everything for one story world — one or more books plus the Series Bible that tracks the characters, locations, and details shared across them.
Start a new project#
- On the welcome screen, click New Project. (From inside another project, use
File → New Project,
⌘⇧N/Ctrl+Shift+N.) - Give the project a name.
- Choose where on your disk to save it, and confirm.
Verkilo creates a single .verk file at that location. Everything — your
manuscript, your Series Bible, your snapshots — lives inside it, which makes the
project easy to back up, move, or sync with your own tools.
Add a book#
- Go to Go → Books (
⌘1/Ctrl+1). - Click New Book in the top right.
- The book is created as “New Book” and opens straight away.
- To rename it, return to Books and click the Book settings button on the book’s card. Title, author, ISBN, and the copyright details your exports use all live there.
A project can hold as many books as your series needs — see Books and sections.
Add your first section#
Sections are the scenes and chapters you actually write in.
- With the book open, right-click in the navigator on the left and choose Add New Section.
- A section named “New Section” appears there.
- Double-click its name to rename it, type the real title, and press
Enter.
Write your opening scene#
- Click the section in the navigator to open it in the editor.
- Start typing. There’s no save button — Verkilo writes to disk as you go.
- Right-click in the navigator again when you’re ready for the next scene.
Where to next#
- Tour the interface in The Verkilo workspace.
- Learn the writing surface in The editor.
- Start tracking who’s who in the Series Bible.
