Export your Verkilo data
Your project belongs to you. Verkilo can export a full copy of all your project data at any time — every book scene by scene, every character and location, your whole notebook, and your images — in two open formats that need nothing to read: plain Markdown files, or a website that runs in any browser. Both live under Project → Export Data.
These are whole-project exports. For sending a single book to readers, printers, or editors, use the per-book export instead — see the exporting overview.
Export as Markdown#
Choose Project → Export Data → As Markdown…, pick a folder, and Verkilo writes your project as plain Markdown files — one file per scene, character, location, and notebook entry, with your images alongside as ordinary files.
The folder is ready to open as an Obsidian vault:
your [[links]] work, and every scene is tagged with the characters and
places that appear in it, so the graph view and tag pane light up
immediately. It’s equally at home anywhere plain text is welcome — an AI
assistant, a search tool, version control, or a drawer you never open again.
Export as a website#
Choose Project → Export Data → As Website…, pick a folder, and Verkilo
builds a private website of your whole project. Open index.html in any
browser and click through: each book with its scenes in reading order,
every character and place on its own page, your notebook, your images.
The site works on any computer, with no internet connection and no Verkilo installed — hand the folder to anyone, or keep it as an archive that will open just as well in twenty years.
Character pages include something the app itself doesn’t show in one place: each relationship in both directions, including who feels what about whom, book by book.

Comments, snapshots, and app settings stay in your project file — they’re working state, not writing.
Exporting again#
Run either export into the same folder any time — Verkilo replaces what it generated last time with the current state of your project. It will never overwrite a folder it doesn’t recognize as its own: if you point an export at a folder containing your own files, it refuses and tells you which file stopped it.
